HIGHWAYS 
A key asset of the Emporia-Greensville area is its excellent network of interstate and primary highways:
  • Interstate 95, the north-south corridor for the east coast, passes through the area, and is accessible through six interchanges;
  • U.S. Route 301 runs parallel to I-95 and passes through the City of Emporia;
  • U.S. Route 58 — a major four-lane, east-west corridor — intersects I-95 in Emporia. The US 58 Bypass is completed around the north side of Emporia.
AIR SERVICE
Emporia-Greensville Regional Airport
Located in Greensville County, three miles east of the corporate limits on U.S. Route 58, the Emporia-Greensville airport features:
  • nearly $1 million in recent improvements including improved navigational devices (localizer);
  • local weather station information (AWOS);
  • new terminal building/conference room;
  • one lighted, hard-surface runway — 5,009 feet long by 100 feet wide;
  • accommodations for executive, business, and jet-sized aircraft;
  • an expanded parking apron;
  • jet fuel service (new storage tanks) and AvGas fuel; charter service and hangar facilities;
  • courtesy car;
  • U.S. Customs Service with quick turnaround.

Richmond International Airport
Richmond International Airport is within a 60-minute drive; carriers include:

  • Commercial Service: AirTran Airways, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Northwest Airlines, U.S. Airways, United Airlines;
  • freight and air express services.

Norfolk International Airport
Norfolk International Airport is within a 90-minute drive; carriers include:

  • Commercial Service: American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Airlines, Independence Air, Northwest Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Express, and U.S. Airways;
  • freight and air express services.
RAIL SERVICE
Freight service is provided to the Emporia-Greensville area by two railroads:
  • CSX runs north-south and is closely aligned with U.S. Route 301;
  • Norfolk Southern Corporation runs east-west.

MOTOR TRANSIT
Approximately 40 trucking companies are available within a 50-mile radius of the Emporia-Greensville area. The 4 truck lines with facilities in Emporia-Greensville are:
  • Estes — heavy hauling, van;
  • Grayson Mitchell, Inc. — motor freight, flatbed;
  • Maverick;
  • Western Express

PORTS
Richmond, Virginia
Located 60 miles north of the Emporia-Greensville area on Interstate 95.

The Intermediate Terminal services:

  • ships with a draft of less than 16 feet, and
  • barges and river-bound traffic.

The Deepwater Terminal features:

  • service for ocean-going vessels, up to 525 feet plus and drawing up to 22 feet;
  • a channel dredged to 25 feet at mean low water;
  • 1,250 foot wharf — berthing for three ships at a time;
  • 250,000 square feet of covered warehouse capacity with 18 acres of open storage;
  • the only USDA approved livestock loading facility on the East Coast;
  • weekly direct container service to Western Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean;
  • breakbulk liner service to South America, West Africa, the Persian Gulf, and South Asia.

Hampton Roads
Located 75 miles east of the Emporia-Greensville area, the Ports of Hampton Roads feature:

  • 5 marine terminals at Newport News, Norfolk, Portsmouth, Chesapeake;
  • 50 foot deepwater channels;
  • large volume cargo-containerized, breakbulk, heavy lift, roll-on/roll-off, LASH, liquid, and dry bulk facilities;
  • state-of-the-art container berths in Norfolk, Portsmouth, and Newport News;
  • the number one export port in the nation.

FOREIGN TRADE ZONES

Two general purpose Foreign Trade Zones are located within a one-hour drive of the Emporia-Greensville area. One is located near U.S. 58 in Suffolk and the second is located near I-64 at Richmond International Airport. A manufacturer may establish a Foreign Trade Sub Zone at its facility in the Emporia-Greensville area in co-operation with either nearby Foreign Trade Zone. Within Foreign Trade Zones and Sub Zones, goods from foreign countries can be stored, exhibited, processed, fabricated and reshipped abroad, without payment of Customs duties or state ad valorem taxes.
