PARKS AND RECREATION
The
City of Emporia and the
County of Greensville operate
a cooperative recreation
program for city and county
residents the Emporia-Greensville
Recreation Association
and the Community Youth
Center. Activities sponsored
by the agencies include
soccer, little league baseball,
basketball, football, softball,
and seasonal activities. Over
60 acres of park facilities
offer a variety of activities,
including: 8 baseball
fields, 4 soccer/football
fields, 8 basketball
courts, 3 playgrounds,
4 lighted tennis courts,
and a 25 acre passive
park along the Meherrin
River with over 2 miles
of paved walking trails.
Three picnic pavilions
are also available. Lake
Gaston, located southwest
of Emporia-Greensville,
covers 48,900 acres and
offers a variety of recreational
opportunities.

FESTIVALS/EVENTS
The Emporia-Greensville
region hosts many annual
events throughout the year,
including the following
most popular:
- The Great Peanut
Bicycle Tour - September
8-11
The Emporia-Greensville
region will host the
27th annual Great Peanut
Bicycle Tour & Rides,
sponsored by The Emporia Bicycle Club,
Inc. The event offers
four days of bicycle
riding and touring
in beautiful southside
Virginia and northeastern
North Carolina. A series
of rides and tours is designed to appeal
to all levels of bicycle riders, and
a grand country setting
is our backdrop. All
rides begin at the
Cattail Creek R.V.
Park and Campground,
located three miles
west of I-95 at Exit
4. Directions to the
campground are plainly

Peanut Festival
- September 23-25
This festival celebrates
the Virginia Peanut, farmers
and the fall harvesting
season in this southeastern
Virginia region with rides,
games, crafts, food, music, a parade and
car show. Great fun for all ages.

Pork Festival
- June, held annually the second Wednesday
in June
One of the east coast's
largest food festival,
attended by more than 15,000
people, this event combines
all your favorite pork
dishes served with continuous
live music from multiple
stages. Enjoy the food, fun and party.
- 2006 Bike Virginia
Tour - June 25
The Emporia-Greensville
region will serve as host
of this event in which
approximately 2,000 cyclists
are expected to participate.
